This whimsical, generously sized, sturdy book bag is a combination of leather bag (easily sewn on a sewing machine) and knitted felt and needle-felted flap. Use your wool scraps to make a bold statement and expect the world to take notice when you carry life's necessities in style. Finished size is approximately 12" high x 16.5" wide x 4.5" deep (not including the strap). Designed by Marta McCall.
Knit and felt the Cheery O's Book Bag with 840 yards (768 meters) of Worsted Weight Feltable Wool (pictured in Galway (100% Wool; 210yds/192m) by Plymouth) and assorted 100% wool scrap yarn. Suggested needles are US 10.5 (6.5mm) Needles. You will also need a Tapestry Needle, Felting Needles, Felting Foam, 2 pieces of suede, leather, corduroy, ultra suede, denim or other sturdy fabric for front and back of bag, 1 piece of leather for sides/bottom, 1 piece of leather for strap, 1 skein of matching embroidery floss, 1 large nail or awl to make a hole for the buckle in the leather strap), a hammer, a washing machine for felting, two 1" nickel buckles, 1 sharp leather needle, 1 leather thimble, and 1 piece of 1/8" Masonite board cut to 4" x 16".
