August 2005

Lazy Days of August

It's August. It's hot. It's the perfect time to start knitting for Fall so that your projects will be ready to wear when the cooler weather arrives. But if you can't think about picking up wool yet, here are some great project ideas. These are designs that you can wear as this hot Summer makes its way to a crisp Fall. Choose your shady spot and create one of these season-spanning designs.

From Berroco and Rowan,
What's New

Our collection of Lantern Moon Ebony and Rosewood Knitting Needles is now in stock. We have these beautiful heirloom quality straight knitting needles in US sizes 6 through 15 in 10" and 12" lengths.

New Books
Scarves A Knitter's Dozen from XRX Books offers 24 projects for all skill levels. The scarves range from functional pieces to highly stylized pieces. The designs feature simple yarns and simple stitches and luxurious yarns and complex, exotic stitches.
The Knitter's Handbook also from XRX is a compact, concise and convenient technique book. Inside, you'll find a detailed table of contents with a Quick Access listing so you can find what you are looking for with ease. Note pages at the end of the book provide room for you to add your own ideas, as well as a page where you can index what you've added. Grab your knitting, and see how easy it is to cast on in pattern, to shape shoulders with refined short rows, and to do it all with confidence.
Knitting has become today's top crafting craze, and children want to learn! Kid's Knit Simple Steps to Nifty Projects includes 20 great projects from doll blankets to backpacks. The easy-to-follow lessons go from very basic to more advanced skills. Children will learn how to read a pattern, cast on and do simple stitches, bind off, darn in ends, make tassels, fringes and pom-poms, sew on a snap fastener, join a new ball of yarn, and much more.

Vogue Knitting Fall 2005 will be in stock by August 9.  "Gypsy Spirit" features romantic colors and patterns, incredible cabled sweaters, unique yarn combinations, and beautiful lacy shawls.  Read about Japanese knitwear design, learn the amazing Turkish cast on from Meg Swansen, keep on top of the current trends and see what's "in vogue" in knitting and crochet!

Tips & Tricks:  On Twisting Ribbon Yarn . . .

A recent edition of Berroco's Knit Bits addressed knitters' frustration with the way ribbon yarns such as Suede and Zen twist. Knitters wonder if they need to keep them flat while knitting. The answer: "No. Only if you want to make yourself crazy. It is the nature of all ribbon yarns to twist. It has to do with the construction of the yarn. There is no need to expend all that time and energy "untwisting" the yarn periodically; just knit as you always do and pay no mind to the twisting. You will find that your finished fabric will turn out just fine." Berroco Knit Bits is a free newsletter that introduces new Berroco products and provides a wealth of information about the craft. Our Gallery

We think it is helpful to see designs created by our fellow knitters and crocheters, outside of the professional photography featured in pattern books. We are working on expanding our gallery and adding photos to some of our patterns under "What other crafter's have done with this pattern." We have already posted a wonderful version of the Stitch Diva Celebrity Shawl created in Rowan's Cotton Tape. The shawl is gorgeous. Creating it in Cotton Tape as opposed to the featured yarn, Noro Hana Silk, produced a wonderful result at a substantially reduced price.

We'd love to see your creations! E-mail photos to Natalie@DreamWeaverYarns.com.
