June 2008

Good Gauge

Much like a good book, a good man, and a good time, never underestimate the value of good gauge. Good advice offered time and again by experienced knitters and crocheters: Save time by taking the time to create a gauge swatch.

To knit a gauge swatch, start with the needle size suggested in the pattern or on the yarn label.  Check your needle gauge (that is, your needle size) with the new Needle Gauge Pendant from Debra's Garden.  The Pendants measure US needle sizes ranging from US 0 through US 17, and they are available in 8 eye-catching colors.  They are as accurate as they are beautiful!

Finding Your Knit Gauge

Needle in hand, cast on at least 20 stitches and work in stockinette, or in a pattern stitch as specified in the pattern, for about 4".  Measure how many stitches and how many rows you are knitting per inch.  This is your knit gauge.  If you are knitting more stitches per inch than the pattern requires, use a larger needle; if you are knitting fewer, use a smaller needle.

Finding Your Crochet Gauge

To crochet a gauge swatch, start with the hook size suggested in the pattern or on the yarn label. Chain at least 20 stitches. Work in the pattern stitch specified in the pattern for about 4". Measure how many stitches and how many rows you are crocheting per inch. This is your crochet gauge.  If you are crocheting more stitches per inch than the pattern requires, use a larger hook; if you are crocheting fewer, use a smaller hook.

Jacquelyn Landry Burtonesque Pattern

Inspired by the famous director, Burtonesque is a design that bridges the gap between short sleeves and full on sweater.  Decreases and increases create a visual image that is distinctly skeletal. Whether you consider them gothic or mod, functional or ornamental, they are as unique as the director himself.
